Unity Project

“I hope this workshop will make people more aware of what is going on at school. If just one person will do something or stand up for someone, other people will see that harassing, bullying and picking on people is not cool and they will do the same. It has to start somewhere.”
 - High School Unity Project Student
The Unity Project is the Center for Preventing Hate’s comprehensive, multi-year collaboration with schools to address issues of bias and harassment. Since the first school joined in 2002, the Unity Project has expanded to encompass entire school districts and many individual elementary, middle and high schools throughout Maine, New Hampshire, across the United States and in Northern Ireland.

We know that changing school climate cannot happen overnight. Schools in the Unity Project make a commitment of time and resources in order to address issues of bullying and harassment over several years. The Unity Project may include any combination of the existing Center programs and custom-designed workshops to address issues that are of particular relevance to a given school. Facilitators are also available to assist schools when unexpected issues of bullying, bias or harassment occur.

For many schools, the effect of focusing on school climate in an intentional, inclusive manner can be transformational. When given the opportunities and proper resources, students, faculty, staff, and administrators can all become powerful leaders in interrupting and preventing bias and harassment in school.
