At the Center for Preventing Hate, we empower employers, employees, and co-workers with the knowledge that they have the ability to positively impact their work environment. We give people the skills and courage to advocate for a safe and respectful work environment for everyone.
Our Approach
Our approach with all our partners is similar in strategy. First, we gauge the form and impact of bias and expressions of bias in the workplace. Then, we develop a tailored action plan with the partnering business or organization – a plan to interrupt the culture that allows for expressions of bias to continue. Then, our experienced staff implements the plan, which usually focuses on anti-bias training and dialogues. Finally, the Center provides on-going support for a successful transition to a renewed respectful environment.
Climate Assessment
A Climate Assessment is the starting point for bias and harassment prevention efforts. In partnership with the employer, the Center organizes a series of focus groups with a cross section of staff. During the interviews, the Center evaluates the type and extent of bias, stereotyping and harassment that exists in a particularly workplace. A focus group report is then presented to the employer with strategic recommendations for improving the work climate.
Crisis Response
When incidents of harassment or hate occur in workplaces, the Center acts quickly to guide employers in responding sensitively and effectively. Working with employers and employees, the Center has facilitated a range of effective responses, including employee-to-employee trainings, new hiring policies, inclusive workplace materials and signage, and community outreach. Our purpose is always to help support members of communities that are targeted by harassment and to help workplaces eliminate the conditions that allowed the harassment to occur.
